Amazon India Review - The Amazon India Story
It has been three years since Amazon came to India, by establishing Amazon India. Back then, the Indian online marketplace was completely dominated by Flipkart and Snapdeal. But the amount of growth achieved by the Amazon India team over the last three years has been nothing short of phenomenal.
When Amazon had come to India three years ago, they had virtually no infrastructure and were starting from zero. Jeff Bezos, the legendary founder and CEO of Amazon, spoke about the challenges of starting from the scratch in India at the Code Conference earlier in 2016: “I think some of the investors in India in the early days thought that India might be a replay of China and they have found out that it hasn’t gone that way and our team in India has just done an unbelievable job.”
Amazon entered the Chinese market in 2004, but hasn’t really seen much success in China because of the dominance of Alibaba, the giant Chinese company. But in India, it has had much better luck. India is a large country with a population of close to 1.3 billion, where internet usage is growing fast. Over 35% of India’s population have access to the internet today, and there are around ten million new internet users every month. Online shopping in India is on the ascendency as well.
That’s why India is such an important market for a giant company such as Amazon. When asked about the issues faced by Amazon in India, particularly regarding the infrastructure, Jeff Bezos said, “We (Amazon) are doing a lot of it (infrastructure) ourselves. In India, we do most of our last mile transportation ourselves. It’s our only choice. We’ve opened many more fulfillment centers. The regulations in India are also very different. So it has to be a three piece sales model. All our sales in India are marketplace sales. We don’t have any owned inventory sales.”
What is Amazon’s India strategy? What has Bezos learned from his bad experiences in China? “One lesson is to customize the product more for local markets. Amazon did much more of that in India and has been more successful as a result,” Bezos said.
Amazon India has a big advantage over its Indian competitors, Flipkart and Snapdeal. The Indian companies have to look for investors to expand, while Amazon India does not have to – it is one of the biggest companies in the world and well financed by its parent company.
Amazon has been gradually eating up Flipkart’s and Snapdeal’s share of the e-commerce market, slowly but surely. Bezos has already invested $5 billion in India, with more to come in the near future.
Amazon Versus Flipkart – Who’s Winning?
Recent reports indicate that Amazon India is eating Flipkart’s lunch. Amazon is well ahead of Flipkart when it comes to web traffic for both desktop and mobile in India, according to a report put out by Kotak Institutional Equities.
The data taken in the period from November 2015 to May 2016 indicates that Amazon India has generated 33% higher mobile web traffic and 62% higher PC web traffic than Flipkart. Amazon India gets an average monthly traffic of 180 million, while Flipkart gets 120 million.
Amazon also leads when it comes to app downloads and usage. The Amazon India app is well ahead of Flipkart app when it comes to ranking on Google Playstore. Google Playstore ranking is based on the number of downloads, frequency of interactions, number of user ratings, average ratings and number of backlinks.
Flipkart is no longer in the top 10 rankings of the Google Playstore, while Amazon has climbed up in the rankings. Both Amazon India and Flipkart have gotten about 50 million downloads on Google Playstore.
There are many experts who have questioned Flipkart’s strategy. Some like Pragya Singh of retail management consulting firm Technopak Advisors suggest that Flipkart has taken eyes off the ball, which has worked to Amazon’s advantage. Ms. Singh says, "Flipkart may still be a leader, but the big message is that Amazon is challenging them. Amazon also has the leverage of having strategic investor backing. India is important for Amazon and it has made it clear."
Flipkart has made strategic mistakes such as focusing on the mobile at the cost of the web. Myntra, which is an online fashion brand owned by Flipkart, for example, had completely withdrawn from the web last year and was only available on the mobile. Flipkart was considering doing the same, but the move didn’t work out as planned. Myntra is now back on the web.
