Voonik Review – The Voonik Story
Voonik India is different from most fashion retailers in India as it sells products for men and women on different platforms. The principal brand of the company, Voonik, is for women, while Mr Voonik, a separate platform, is for me. They run on independent websites and apps and have no connection with each other.
In addition to that, the company is planning to launch a premier products platform called Vilara. The company has a business model where they have separate websites and apps for different segments. This, according to the management would enhance the product experience by a considerable extent.
The company was founded in 2013 and directly competes with the likes of Myntra, LimeRoad, AJIO and ABOF – which are among the biggest online fashion stores in India. The company also has Amazon and Snapdeal as its competitors.
So far, Voonik India has raised over $27 million in funding from major investors such as Sequoia Capital, Times Internet Ltd and Seedfund. The companies acquired by Voonik include TrialKart, a mobile platform which delivers a virtual dressing room experience; Getsy, a shopping site for men; Styland, a salon and spa booking app Styland; Picksilk, an online silk store, and Zohraa, an online marketplace for designers and boutiques. Voonik has also acquired Dekkoh, a styling and personalisation app.
Sujayath Ali, CEO, Voonik, explains the rationale behind the acquisitions: “By acqui-hiring Zohraa, we got access to a premium supplier network. With Picksilk on board, we now have access to a highly coveted silk weaver community. Styl team gave the immediate impetus to the Vilara App development. We got to market with both web and app within a record time.”
Ali, also spoke about how his company was building a lean online marketplace for fashion products: “When you are handling inventory, you take the inventory risk, you have to pay for the warehouse cost, the fulfilment cost. For every order you pay for the photographs, tagging, cataloguing. They (competitors) are operating like retail companies, whereas Voonik doesn’t consider itself as a retail company. When you act as a platform, the cost you pay is only for technology.”
In India, most ecommerce companies struggle to make profits. But that’s not a problem with Voonik, which because of its business model, is able to churn out profits year after year. India’s online fashion business is expected to be worth $35 billion by 2020, and Voonik hopes to be one of the companies in the thick of things.
A report from Google revealed that fashion was going to be the best selling category in Indian online shopping sites, ahead of consumer electronics. In fact, fashion is expected to account for 35% of the money spent by online shoppers in India.
Harminder Sahni, who heads the consulting firm Wazir Advisors, was full of praise for Voonik’s profitable business model. He says, “Voonik’s focus on technology and making suppliers pay for warehousing and cataloguing is the way to go. I think leveraging technology, reducing costs and making everyone, including suppliers, brands and consumers pay for the service which is being offered is the right thing to do.”
